2 Days Mini Wheel Throwing & Micro Raku with Fay De Winter

Saturday 6th June 2026 at Urban Potters and Saturday 20th June 2026 at Oaks Park Artist Studios
You will have the opportunity to learn how to throw miniature pots using porcelain clay on specialist small wheels. These pieces will be taken away and bisque-fired in preparation for the Microwave Raku workshop.
The workshop will take place on two different dates at two different venues:
- Saturday 6th June 2026 at Urban Potters, Unit E Pearl building, 4 Scena Way London SE5 0HB
- Saturday 20th June 2026 at Oaks Park Artist Studios, The Old Stable Block, Croydon Ln, Woodmansterne, Sutton, SM7 3BA
Please ensure you can attend both sessions and are aware of both locations.
Day 1 – Mini Wheel Throwing
📅 Saturday 6th June 2026
📍 Urban Potters
⏰ 2pm– 4pm (please arrive on time to make the most of the day)
You will throw pots on a mini wheel. All tools will be provided.
There is no limit to how many pots you can make, but you may select them to fit in max three chambers to be fired for the Raku day.
Your work will be bisque-fired and brought to the second venue.
Please wear appropriate clothing.
Refreshments will be available on site.
Day 2 – Microwave Raku Workshop
📅 Saturday 20th June 2026
📍 Oaks Park Artist Studios
⏰ 10am – 3pm (please arrive on time to make the most of the day)
The day will begin with a glazing and firing demonstration.
You may finish earlier or later depending on the firing schedule.
Six glazes will be provided, with examples showing their effects. One glaze may be used per item.
Please wear appropriate clothing: closed-toe shoes and long cotton sleeves.
You may wish to bring a chair and a bottle of water.
As this workshop will be held outdoors, please bring items suitable for all weather conditions.
Be aware that you will smell of smoke after firing, so plan accordingly if you are going elsewhere afterwards.
You are participating in this workshop at your own risk, so please listen carefully to all instructions. I will be on hand to provide one-to-one assistance during the firing process.
Please bring a tin box with an airtight lid (e.g., a small cake or biscuit tin) to help fire your pieces. Also bring something to transport your work home after the Raku firing.
Optional: You may bring feathers or hair to experiment with on unglazed pieces — this will be discussed further on the day.
Pieces should be no larger than 3 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter, to fit inside the round kiln chamber.
We aim to complete three firings each. For example, you can fit one larger piece (H. 3 cm × D. 10 cm) or several smaller ones per firing.
Avoid firing pieces with cracks, as they may break during the cooling process when placed in water.
Please note there is always a risk of cracking, glaze crawling, or other imperfections — this is part of the spontaneous nature of Raku firing. Each piece will be entirely unique.
