Exhibitions | Surface Stories: Modern Slipware | 12th September to 25th October 2026 | Middleport Pottery Heritage Site | Stoke-on-Trent

Surface Stories: Modern Slipware is an exciting exhibition of handmade studio pottery celebrating the expressive possibilities of contemporary mark-making using slip.

This Autumn, Clay College Stoke are bringing together a curated collection of eight leading studio potters whose work explores the expressive language of slip decoration. By bringing together this group of leading practitioners, working at the forefront of modern slipware, Surface Stories: Modern Slipware celebrates the enduring capacity of clay to carry stories through surface, where mark making becomes a powerful expression of identity, place and process.

These contemporary makers reimagine this historic ceramic language through bold pattern, rhythmic gesture and textured surfaces. The result is a collection of works that honours the past while revealing the vitality and innovation of modern slipware today. Visitors will be encouraged to trace the pathways of the maker’s hand where the slip has been brushed, trailed, poured and layered to create richly decorative surface designs. The exhibition is free to attend and we welcome for collectors, design enthusiasts, ceramic artists, and those interested in heritage and contemporary crafts.

You can view and purchase from the exhibition at the Clay College Gallery at the Middleport Heritage Site in Stoke-on-Trent, or online at www.claycollegestoke.co.uk

Two of the exhibitors, Mike Parry and Penny Simpson, will be at the Gallery in the afternoon on the opening day (Saturday, 12th). Great opportunity to meet and talk to them.
