Path and Inspiration
Having completed ceramics GCSE many years ago, I did not touch clay for approximately 25 years after leaving school. It has always been a dream of mine to come back to work with clay, and to eventually have a home studio and a kiln of my own. In December 2021 I left my career as a secondary school Maths teacher and have worked hard to achieve those dreams, now working from my studio in the garden that we built ourselves (as well as being a Maths tutor part time!).Process and Practice
Initially I worked mainly with stoneware clay, making both functional and decorative pieces using both hand building and wheel thrown techniques. In recent years I have moved to working more with porcelain, making purely decorative pieces that are often displayed on recycled/reclaimed materials such as slate or quarry tiles. Some pieces are smoke fired, whilst others are left in their pure porcelain state. I particularly enjoy saggar firing, letting the fire create striking marks on the clay.
