Path and Inspiration
I made my first pieces of pottery in the 1960s but then a career and family interrupted my pastime until I returned just before Covid. My initial path was to take some 1 week courses to see whether my ambition was compatible with my ability and after my last course I became a member of Turning Earth studios in Leyton. As a very long time admirer of Lucie Rie and Hans Coper my initial efforts were to understand how they achieved such beautiful pieces and a lot of my pottery is inspired by themProcess and Practice
All my pieces start on the wheel, I love the process and skill involved in being able to centre a lump of clay and transform it into a thrown object. A simple bowl can be a beautiful thing. But I also like clays ability to be transformed into more than just a bowl, by combining pieces, altering after throwing, manipulating the clay in ways that would be impossible to simply throw.
