Path and Inspiration
My work is mainly inspired by the aesthetics of Japanese ceramics and the British Studio pottery tradition. I aim to make quiet and beautiful functional and decorative ceramics that reflect the earth and elements from which the clay comes. Decoration of a piece is always quite free and expressive, and a response to the form irself.Process and Practice
I work mainly on the wheel in stoneware, though some larger pieces have handbuilt elements. I use a variety of different clay bodies often combined with contrasting slip, which I glaze with simple thinned glazes that allow the clay to show through. I also work with my own wood ash glazes and copper and iron oxide. I fire in both oxidation and reduction, depending on what kind of result I am aiming for.
