Path and Inspiration
Libby Daniels works from her home studio in Haslemere. A graduate of the BA Ceramic Design course at Staffordshire University and member of the Society of Designer Craftsmen, after a long career as an Art teacher she set up her studio in 2018 to work as a full time ceramicist. Libby creates pots which are influenced by the Sussex coast, pebbles and patterns in nature. Her own clay stamps are used as well as freely painted abstract patterns on the vessels and a coastal palette of glazes.Process and Practice
Sea-worn flint pebbles collected from the beach, with their surprising colours and abstract patterns inspire freely formed stoneware pots. Pieces are thrown and altered then rims shaped. Others are stamp impressed or textured crank shards are added. The distinctive, precise coloured line of the rims are an exact margin from the exterior to interior of the vessel. The layers of hand painted, thin underglaze in blue, grey, green and orange echo the abstract markings and patterns on the flint.
