Path and Inspiration
I studied Fine Art to degree level, and commercial design to masters level, but was only drawn to work in clay much later when I was bowled over by a carved tile in the Museum of Islamic Art, Jerusalem. After that epiphany I began to explore ceramic making alongside my professional practice, and eventually transitioned to working in ceramics full time. I retain a passion for photography, collage, typography and ancient sculpture, all of which have become elements of my ceramic work.Process and Practice
I make slab-built vessels using combinations of stoneware bodies. I apply found photographs from the early 20th century, so as to contrast the fleeting moment of the image with the notion of a 'memorial' object. I add impressions of names taken from gravestones, and stencilled phrases from ancient texts. In this way I am exploring the ephemeral nature of memories, and the objects we create to stand in for them.
