Path and Inspiration
Shell’s ceramics journey began two years ago and has quickly developed into a passion for form, surface and decoration. Inspired by pattern, illustration, folkloric design and the colours and character of 1970s ceramics, her work moves between simple functional pieces and richly decorated, expressive work. She is particularly drawn to sgraffito, detailed mark-making and the possibilities of clay as a surface for illustration.Process and Practice
Working mainly in stoneware, Shell combines throwing and hand-building with a strong focus on surface decoration. Her practice ranges from functional mugs, bowls and tableware to sgraffito, wall pieces and more sculptural work. She makes at Claydays Studio in Beckenham, where she also works as a studio technician, and is currently expanding her skills through a year-long ceramics course at City Lit.
