Path and Inspiration
Following the death of my father, I needed an outlet for... myself. I turned to pottery, something I'd always wanted to try, and have been at my local pottery studio in NW London for 3yrs. My pieces are inspired by my personal experiences and the world around me. Zawadi is the Swahili word for "gift" and also my middle name. It highlights my intention to cultivate ceramic pieces which can be enjoyed as if someone is receiving a present, and in turn reflects the gift that pottery has been for me.Process and Practice
I throw the majority of my pieces on the wheel. I usually have a rough idea of what form I am going for but often I go with the flow of the wheel and adapt to the clay's "suggestions". I find the whole artistic process to be a cathartic exploration of letting nature take its course. I offer up suggestions to the clay and it suggests things back to me. I tailor my glazing to the feel of each individual piece and let the finished pieces speak for themselves.
